Radu Magdin: GGS Global Consultation Process

Radu Magdin: GGS Global Consultation Process
Strategikon, Romania’s first English speaking think tank, and Black Sea Leader Strategy is hosting the Good Governance Summit on 4 – 5 May 2017.
In preparation of this Summit, we are engaging in a worldwide consultation of relevant experts, on the main challenges for good governance today! Your input is highly appreciated and will be included in the pre-summit Report which Strategikon will circulate with all the relevant stakeholders. The names and affiliation of all those responding to this survey will be mentioned.
Now, more than ever, state officials must cooperate with their counterparts and also with the private sector and academia. The event aims to provide such a framework through round table talks, which can be further continued by business meetings.
The first panel of the event, Romanian Perspectives on Good Governance, will examine Romania’s path from 1989 to joining the EU and NATO, then the disconnect of leaders and citizens of the past few years, and looking towards the Council of the EU Presidency in 2019. The second panel, Change Management in European Democracies, will look at past liberal transitions to learn  lessons for dealing with current challenges, such as Brexit, mass migration, the rise of populist messages and populist politicians.

The remarkable rise of the Asian economies and their increased role in the global political scene, underlined by the first-ever speech at Davos by China’s Xi Jinping defending globalisation, as well as the threat of ISIS inspired the third panel: Good Governance in the Middle East and South-East Asia. We live in a fast-paced and interconnected world where breakthrough technologies, demographic shifts and political transformations have far-reaching societal and economic consequences. The panel on the Overarching Challenges of Good Governance will tackle the issues affecting and influencing peace, prosperity and security across states.

The summit is organized under the guidance of Ioan Mircea Pascu, President of Strategikon and Vice-president of the European Parliament, in collaboration with the  Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence. Some of our most esteemed guest are Gen. David Petraeus, Former CIA Director; Shaukat Aziz, Former Pakistani Prime Minister; Kurt Volker, Former US Permanent Representative to NATO; Robert Salisbury, Former Leader of the House of Lords; Yousef Al Otaiba, UAE Ambassador to the US; David Richards, Former UK Chief of Defense Staff General; Sergey Rogov, Director of the Institute for the USA and Canadian Studies; Rola Dashti, former Kuwaiti Minister for Planning and Development; Gen. Philip Breedlove, Former SACEUR; Anthony Scaramucci, Former Advisor to the Trump campaign.

Romania meeting: former NATO, CIA chiefs to discuss security

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) – A former director of the CIA and former supreme commander of NATO will join other former high-ranking officials in the Romanian capital to discuss a wide range of issues from migration to terrorism.

The May 4-5 meeting organized by Romanian think tank Strategikon will also focus on populism and Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

A statement sent to The Associated Press Thursday said there will be discussions on the need for officials to cooperate with the private sector and academics.

Former CIA director David Petraeus and retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, who oversaw sweeping changes at NATO to deal with a resurgent Russia and the threat of armed Islamic extremism in the Middle East and Africa, will also attend. Breedlove left the post in 2016.
