Dan Mihalache outlined the main actions and achievements of the Romanian Embassy in Cyprus in 2024
Ambassador Dan Mihalache outlined, in his interview for Radio România Internațional, the main actions and achievements of the Romanian Embassy in Cyprus in 2024, emphasizing the renewed impetus given to bilateral relations. Politically, Romania and Cyprus work closely together within the European Union, adopting common positions and supporting the observance of international law, especially in the context of the island’s division following the events of 1974. In the educational field, the signing of the 11th cooperation protocol on education, science, and culture has contributed to boosting academic and cultural exchanges.
Economic relations remain strong, with Cyprus being one of Romania’s most important trading partners. The Embassy encourages both Cypriot investments in Romania—particularly in IT, photovoltaic energy, and tourism—and the promotion of Romanian projects in the Cypriot market. An essential objective is to develop mutual tourism: Cyprus is already a popular destination for Romanians, but efforts are also being made to attract Cypriot tourists to winter resorts, spa locations, and monasteries in Romania.
In the cultural and academic sphere, cooperation takes shape through art exhibitions and joint projects involving artists from both countries, as well as through university partnerships. A notable step is the establishment of a Department of Romanian Language, Culture, and Civilization at the Technological University of Limassol, for which a protocol has already been signed. The Romanian community in Cyprus, officially estimated at around 47,000 people, benefits from a network of nine weekend schools supported by the Alliance of Romanians in Cyprus and by the Cypriot Orthodox Church, aimed at preserving children’s cultural and linguistic identity.
In the context of the war in Ukraine, Cyprus—an EU state but not a NATO member—and Romania coordinate their positions internationally. Consularly, the Embassy set up a larger number of polling stations for the 2024 European, parliamentary, and presidential elections, making it easier for Romanians in Cyprus to vote. The Embassy also organizes public diplomacy events (film screenings, exhibitions) and National Day celebrations, thus further strengthening relations and promoting Romanian values in Cyprus.
