After a week of politics, let’s spend a moment on policies – policies that are expected and needed in the US and Europe alike.
My friend and colleague John D’Attoma has brilliantly shown in a fresh NBER study how the people in US counties with high numbers of Covid19 infections and deaths were significantly more likely to support expanding government-provided unemployment insurance and expanding government-provided health care. More importantly, this greater support for social safety net programs transcends political ideology!

We should have a more comprehensive dialogue (in the face of current political developments) on how a new economic model will take form in the transatlantic space, what are its key drivers (e.g. green transition) and its key responsibilities (e.g. resilience, sustainability, social security, quality of healthcare)!
