On February 14, during a side event at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) organized for the Young Professional Program (YTL) of the German-Canadian Association (DKG) and MSC@Amerikahaus – Future Leaders, I had the honor of moderating the panel „Hydrogen Hostages: Evaluating the Weaponization of Green Energy Supply Chains in a New Era of Conflict” as President of the Political Research Group.

The conversation explored the intersection of global security, innovation, and the green energy transition, addressing how hydrogen’s growing geopolitical relevance is reshaping energy independence and global stability.

The panel showcased how innovation, investments, and infrastructure are reshaping global energy markets, with insights into key global developments:

United States: Leading the way with 25% of global clean hydrogen production capacity, driven by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Since 2021, U.S. clean hydrogen capacity has grown 1.5x faster than the rest of the world, thanks to incentives for renewable hydrogen production.

China: Rapidly becoming a clean hydrogen powerhouse, accounting for 40% of global electrolyzer manufacturing capacity. By the end of 2024, China aims to install more electrolyzer capacity than the rest of the world combined, raising concerns of market dominance among European manufacturers.

Saudi Arabia: Investing heavily in green hydrogen with the NEOM project, including a $5 billion ammonia plant powered entirely by renewables. This plant, set to start production in 2025, will produce 600 tonnes of clean hydrogen per day.

Europe: Building an extensive hydrogen infrastructure with the European Hydrogen Backbone. Plans include the SoutH2 Corridor, a 3,300 km hydrogen pipeline across Austria, Germany, and Italy, with the EU targeting 11,600 km by 2030 and nearly 40,000 km by 2040.

This conversation went beyond technology and explored how innovation, infrastructure, and energy security intersect with geopolitics—shaping national strategies and global stability.
