Notă de start: acest text este bilingv căci prosperitatea României e legată, mai mult ca oricând acum, în criză, de idei și implicare investițională atât locală, cât și străină.  Starter Disclaimer: this text is bilingual since Romania’s prosperity is linked, more than ever now, in a crisis, by ideas and investor involvement both on the local and foreign side.  Last week, Finance Minister Citu announced that, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the budget has lost 20 billion lei in estimated revenue, while the spending has increased by 12 billion. The signals coming from the economy and reported by the media point towards the risk of up to 2 million people becoming unemployed. On top of this, the opposition is no longer willing to endorse the governmental decisions and will, most likely, seek to block any austerity measures targeting the public sector employees and the pensioners. Unless the president and the government are able to put forward a realistic and balanced plan for how the country should navigate this very complicated economic period, a full-on blame game will become the norm, and the traditional scapegoats will be asked to foot the bill for the recession. Yes, we need solidarity in times of crisis, but there is a thin line between asking the better off to pay more and making economic populism the governing principle in Romania.
